ACT Hosts 14th Annual Festival

Nonprofit Changes Name to “ACT – Artists Creating Together” ‘Hand in Hand with Art’ is the theme for this year’s annual arts Festival, now known as the local chapter of ACT – Grand Traverse, an acronym for Artists Creating Together. The 14th annual event is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 1 and 2 at the Dennos Museum Center on Munson Avenue in Traverse City, from 9:30 until noon both days. During the two-day event, over 200 area students - including those with special needs from the five county Grand Traverse region - will participate experiencing dance, visual art, drama and music.  All workshops will focus on the message of creating and working together; friendship, appreciation of differences, celebrating the beauty around us through the arts.  During the opening presentation, Kids on the Block puppets will officially announce the name change from VSA Michigan – Grand Traverse Area to ACT – Grand Traverse/ Artists Creating Together. Although our name and logo have changed, our commitment to providing the highest quality programs for children and adults with disabilities has not, and is stronger than ever. Partnering with Artists Creating Together (formerly VSA Michigan – Grand Rapids),  ACT – Grand Traverse will continue to grow with a prominent presence in our five county region of northwest Michigan. Max and Jenn to Perform at Special Olympics Winter Games

VSA arts winning Dancin’ Duo of Max Dingeman and Jennifer Howard performed at the closing ceremonies of the Special Olympics Michigan Winter Games. The pair was once again in the spotlight following their recent winning performances during the fall 2011 Swingshift and the Stars Dance-Off for Charity in Traverse City, where they captured first place honors. Representing VSA arts, Max and Jenn performed a ballroom dance routine at the Grand Traverse Resort February 9 to an appreciative audience. “It was a unanimous decision,” said Kimberly Purdy, Director of Public Relations & Marketing for SOMI. “As one of our former athletes, we wanted Max to perform at this important event for Special Olympics.” This year’s Winter Games theme is

And it’s the best Christmas present ever with the announcement that VSA’s Dancin’ Duo – Max Dingeman and Jennifer Howard - are the winners of the 2011 Swingshift and the Stars Dance-Off for Charity! Max and Jenn captured the hearts of the judges and the audience, scoring perfect 10’s from all four judges, not once, but TWICE! VSA arts/ Grand Traverse Area friends and supporters showed their enthusiasm at the ballot box, and helped our nonprofit organization surpass our fundraising goal by raising over $29,500. Among the most important benefits to VSA is the public awareness of our mission and local programming for children and adults with special needs.
